Ambedkar's proposal, Durgabai's amendment: How Constituent Assembly set age criteria for legislators

Indian parliament

A Rajya Sabha committee has proposed reducing the minimum age to contest national and state elections from 25 to 18 years, aligning it with the voting age. The committee believes this change would bring a wider range of perspectives to legislative bodies. However, the Election Commission opposes the proposal, stating that 18-year-olds may lack the necessary experience and maturity for such responsibilities.

[8/6, 3:13 PM] abuhasem1221: The proposal to reduce the minimum age for contesting elections comes after the committee's observation that only 2.2% of MPs in the current Lok Sabha are under the age of 30, despite India's median age being 29 years and eight months. The committee aims to address the underrepresentation of younger voices in the legislative process.
